How can Conscious Parenting Help My Child and Me?
As you navigate through the years of raising your children, there will be many learning opportunities and times when you just want to pull your hair out.
Conscious parenting is the learning part of this. Think of two siblings fighting with each other over a toy. One child was playing with the toy, and the other snatched it out of his hand, so they both began physically fighting.
Once you have separated the two, you will want first to calm yourself down before you begin your admonishments. Remember, you love your children!
Being calm is essential to these strategies. Once you have calmed yourself, you can begin the discipline and learning portion.
There are strategies to deal with these situations that will not cause your child to think you are angry with them or, worse yet, hate them. Even if you are mad, we don’t hate our children. We love them.
Now that you’ve decided how to handle the situation, you can turn this fight into a learning opportunity.
By showing the children how their actions have impacted other people, you may be able to deter these fights from happening in the future. Explaining that hitting their brother can be dangerous and cause pain and sadness will help them think twice the next time there is conflict.
Siblings love each other and don’t want to cause pain and sadness, even if, at the moment, they are angry. You can use this opportunity to teach them that snatching toys out of their brother’s hand is not nice and explain to them how to go about it differently next time.
In this way, they become Conscious of their actions.
This can go both ways. As a parent, you sometimes lose control and maybe yell or act out in anger toward your children. By apologizing or explaining things, you can teach your children how to act when they make a mistake and that we all make mistakes sometimes.
Parenting is a career where we all grow together as parents and children.
