Melina's motives for burning the Erdtree in Elden Ring Runes the Elden Ring remain elusive throughout the Tarnished's quest to be an Elden Lord. This is even though Melina serves as the Tarnished's primary resource of info in a realm that's lore and history are unclear. In reality, even when Melina is close to explaining her motives behind this First Cardinal Sin of burning the Erdtree it is possible that she might not have the full truth.
Melina is a lie with the Tarnished during the first meeting they have together in the Elden Ring. Melina offers the Tarnished an agreement, and claims she'll be the Tarnished's Maiden when she is taken to the foot of the Erdtree. But Melina later admits that she will never be a maiden. She also states the reason she wants to be taken to the Erdtree is to learn the reason why her mother Elden Ring's god, queen Marika is giving her. Melina says, "I'm searching for my reason for being given by my mother in the Erdtree long in the past, due to the fact that I'm still alive in a body that is burned and suffocated. ...."
The words are so obscure that they make the confession seem dishonest which is confirmed when she explains the motives of her quest. If the Tarnished cannot enter to the Erdtree, Melina explains that she, using the Frenzied Fire, can take on the task of burning the thorns that surround the Erdtree and is something she wants due to the chaos that the Lands Between were plunged into after Marika broke her Elden Ring: "I have been watching for a long time that the Lands Between. The world is in desperate need of restoration... And death... without discrimination ...." In this scene, Melina is able to demonstrate the reason for her existence however it is evidently an intention that Marika is the one who destroys the Elden Ring and the god who has blessed The Lands Between with immortality - is not interested in. This raises the question of what really can allow Melina to understand her motives and thwart the desires of Marika and her family, an issue which has a solution in the story of another god: Ranni.
Ranni The witch demigod , who assumes shape of blue doll is the main reason the Shattering occurred and why the Tarnished were exiled from the Elden Ring. Ranni has been believed to come from Radagon the male form of Marika as well as Rennala. But, Ranni is more likely to be a product of Radagon and Marika since she is considered to be an Empyrean which means that she was born of one god, along with Malenia, Miquela, and the most important one, Melina.
The Empyreans were chosen by the Two Fingers who believe in the greater Will in order to become Marika in the role of god to the Lands Between (which is different from being an Outer God). No one of them wished for this fate, particularly Ranni. Ranni thus got the Rune of Death from Maliketh who was granted the Rune of Death by Marika as she did not want to die in the land that comprised the Elden Ring. Ranni granted with the Rune of Death to the Black Knife Assassins in order that they could murder the godchildren of Marika and even Ranni herself. The assassins, however, were only able to kill her partially to allow her soul to be liberated of her Empyrean flesh. Ranni's doll body has enabled her to stay alive throughout her own Lands Between.
The fact that Ranni's soul has no connection from her flesh is a clue to Melina's earlier discussion about not having a body. The spirit of Ranni is like Melina. Given the fact that Melina and Ranni both want to bring death into their respective Lands Between and are missing the eyes that the other the belief that they are both an identical person. This is further confirmed by Melina returning her eyes during the "Lord of Frenzied Fire" conclusion and also having identical to Ranni's. So, the reason Melina has for burning the Erdtree in the Elden Ring is likely to be a part of her "Age of the Stars" ending where Ranni is transformed into hero in the Lands Between and establishes a world where the inhabitants are granted with Elden Ring Runes for sale free will and overthrows the old order that created the chaos that is Elden Ring.
