Each of us at least once had to speak, it could be the defense of a term paper or thesis at university, presentation of a project at work, or even a public speaking in front of an audience. Any performance requires careful preparation to make the material interesting and understandable, the audience did not get bored, you feel confident and able to answer questions. Keep your references useful. I’m Max Rasmussen, a content creator from wowessays.com, and I have prepared some pieces of advice about preparing for great public speaking.
Choose a topic, formulate an issue
Preparing a speech plan begins with choosing a topic and forming an issue: what you really care about and what message you want to convey to your audience. Make sure you know the topic well enough to answer the trickiest questions. Consider in advance what questions may arise and how best to structure your presentation.
Support the material with evidence.
We've prepared the topic and the plan, now let's move on to the main part. Professionalism alone is not enough for the full credibility of the audience, so it is important to support your claims with primary sources, excerpts from scientific studies, statistics. At the end of the presentation, on the last slide, show a list of sources used, what you based your arguments on. If you realize that your material is quite controversial and may cause controversy, prepare special slides in advance to support your information.
Be sensitive to the age and knowledge level of your audience
An important next step is adapting your presentation to the audience. You should understand in advance what kind of people will listen to you: young students who do not know much about the topic or specialists with more experience. For unprepared students will find it difficult to understand, for example, the functions of mitochondria, although for you it is an obvious knowledge. And experienced specialists will be bored to hear about the basics of biology. So if you want to find a common language with the audience, prepare entertaining material for them.
Compose your presentation according to the rules of drama
A monotonous story about genetic discoveries is unlikely to hold your audience's attention for long. Think about the fact that the person came to listen to you, giving up a walk, meeting with friends, or watching your favorite TV series. Therefore, the presentation should contain an intrigue or plot, the story of the problem, the climax and the main conclusions, the denouement. Start your story with an interesting fact, for example, tell about the first genetically improved children, this way you will interest the audience and get credibility. After that, you can move on to the theoretical basis and the audience's interest will not fade. Periodically return to the intrigue, supplementing it with new facts.
Make a presentation.
It is better to show once than to explain 100 times. Pictures, charts, and tables convey information to the audience much better, this is how human psychology works. Do not litter slides with huge paragraphs of text; nobody will read them anyway. Make a clear, simple scheme, which will attract the audience's attention. The number of slides depends on the presentation time, but try to illustrate each thought on the presentation.
And the last step is the rehearsal of the speech. Believe me, this will determine 50% of your success as a speaker. To do this, you need to include a ready-made presentation and tell yourself the material, make the right accents, rehearse your intonation. It's even better if you hold a trial performance in front of friends, relatives, to hear the opinion from the outside.
